The SAT and ACT are given several times a year and are taken by high school juniors and seniors. Most students take their preferred test twice - in the spring of their junior year and again in the fall of their senior year. Being ready for these tests require preparation. Students should start thinking about SAT/ACT preparation when they are in tenth grade, they should be enrolled in a test preparation program by the fall of their junior year.
In addition to any PLAN or PSAT offered through the schools, students should sit for full-length practice exams. While the PLAN and PSAT give students a general sense of their abilities (and thus an estimate of the score they can expect to get on the actual exams), there are differences between those tests and the actual exams (stamina alone can affect students’ performance).
Lastly, rather than make assumptions about which exam is better suited for your child have him/her sit for a practice exam in both. This is especially important for rising juniors. When the revamped SAT rolls out in March 2016, those students will be the first with real-world experience with the test. The basic skills will remain the same, but they will not have the benefit of strategies developed from years of testing experience. With that in mind, sitting for a PSAT has never been more important. Take full advantage of anything being offered by College Board.
